labour available indicated that only 72 men of that trade were registered, and requests to report at once were sent out to all who could be reached. Contact was then established with the Painters' Union, and the appeal for men resulted in the arrival of about thirty. By this time the news had reached Lower Hutt, and the Placement Office there was able to supply ten good men. Then came the task of sorting, because it became necessary to select for this special job those suitable men who had been longest out of regular employment. The selection was practically completed by 2.30 this afternoon and tomorrow morning this army of efficient workers will invade the new ship and by their skill further enhance the gracefulness of her lines.
The Patent Slip Company yesterday asked the Placement Office to supply twenty painters and brush hands for work on a vessel on the slip. The request was received at 8.30 a.m., and the man required were at work within two hours.
