The highest price ever paid for a polo pony at public auction in England was realised at Messrs. Tattersall's sale, at Knightsbridge, when Major N W: Leaf (late 15th/i9th Hussars) received 1000 guineas for Valentine, a six-year-old brown mare by Bay Rhum ll—Dorothy, bred by Mr. F. J. The previous record Enelish auction price for a polo pony, which has stood for over ten years, was 860 guineas; Major Leaf sent up his entire stud of nine, all but one .of which were sold for an aggregate of 3394 guineas," or an average of just, over 424 guineas. Other good prices were 700 guineas for Veriado, a nine-year-old Argentine-bred bay gelding, imported by Major S; C.
