EXPENSIVE POLO PONY
The highest price ever paid for a polo pony at public auction in England was realised at Messrs. Tattersall's sale, at Knightsbridge, when Major N W: Leaf (late 15th/i9th Hussars) received 1000 guineas for Valentine, a six-year-old brown mare by Bay Rhum ll—Dorothy, bred by Mr. F. J. Balfour in the Argentine. She was played in California last .winter. by the owner and by Mr. E. H. Tyrrell-Martin in the international matches at Hiirlingham, as well as in the Roehampton Open and Champion Cud tournaments. The previous record Enelish auction price for a polo pony, which has stood for over ten years, was 860 guineas; Major Leaf sent up his entire stud of nine, all but one .of which were sold for an aggregate of 3394 guineas," or an average of just, over 424 guineas. Other good prices were 700 guineas for Veriado, a nine-year-old Argentine-bred bay gelding, imported by Major S; C. Deed, which was also played by Mr. Tyrrell-Martih;' 460 guineas for Rosa, a chestnut; 340 guineas for Domingo, a chestnut unsexed son of Bay Rhum II: 300 guineas for Maybe, a bay; and 260 guineas for Elena, a chestnut mare. Lineament, a seven-year-old English thoroughbred chestnut gelding (by Square Measure—Margaret Elizabeth), that was played by Mr. Gerald Balding, was sold to dissolve a partnership, and fetched 260 guineas.
