HOURS IN INDUSTRY
DECISIONS OF COURT
Decisions regarding hours of. work have been given by the Arbitration Court in the following cases since it commenced its special sitting to hear applications for amendments to awards and for extensions of the 40-hour week:— 40-HOUR WEEK. Footwear manufacturers. Sawmilling industry. Box-making factories. Timber yards. Woollen mills. Hosiery ahd knitting factories. Paper mills. Ammunition manufacturers. Biscuit and confectionery (by agreement). Manufacture of men's and boys' clothing. Shirt, white, and silk industry. Dressmaking and millinery industry. Range-making industry. Soap manufacturers. Chemical manure factories (by agreement). Jewellery manufacturers. Neck wear manufacturers. Coachbuilders. Fur garment manufacturers. Furniture manufacturers, including upholsterers, polishers, picture-frame makers, and wire mattress makers. Motor mechanics in assembly plants, garages, and motor-cycle shops. Workers on municipal tramcars. Oil stores. Building industry, including carpenters, joiners, i plumbers, bricklayers, painters, plasterers, electrical workers, and labourers. Dunedin-Kaikorai Cable Tramway. Shift workers in gas works. Stonemasons. 44-HGUR WEEK. Storemen and packers. ' Fish and meat preserving and starch making. . , Pottery manufacturers. Bakery trade. Manufacture of burnt lime (except shell lime). Petrol Service station workers. Grocery trade. Tanners and fellmongers. Smokeless fuel manufacturers. Butchers' by-products. Butchers' shops. Bacon factories. Gas-company workers receiving coal and handling ashes, and complaint men. Women's hairdressers. 44 IN SUMMER; 36 IN WINTER. Aerated water manufacturers. 44 IN SUMMER; 40 IN WINTER. Fruit and vegetable preserving and canning and jam making. Carbonate of lime and shell lime works.* Goli-club manufacturers. INTERIM JUDGMENT. The Court has expressed the opinion that a 40-hour week for milk roundsmen and depot workers. in Auckland is practicable if ths margin of profit to the distributor is increased. *The six months at 44 hours per week can be arranged to suit the rusir periods in individual areas. "ACCORDING TO THE HOUSE." Engine-drivers are to work the hourf fixed for their gjace of employment.
