SUCCESSFUL REUNION

HUTT POSTAL EMPLOYEES

There was a large attendance at the second annual reunion of the Hutt "Valley sub-section of the Post and Telegraph Employees' Association on Saturday evening. Mr. N. N. Oldershaw presided, and also present-were the Minister of Finance (the Hon. W. Nash) and Mrs. Nash, the Mayor of Lower Hutt (Mr. J. W. Andrews), the Mayor of Petone (Mr. A. Scholefield), and the Mayor of Upper Hutt (Mr. A. J. McCurdy). In proposing the toast of "The Department," Mr. Andrews said that in efficiency it was surpassed by no other Government Department. The postimen endeared themselves to the people in wartime.

The reply was made by the DirectorGeneral of the Department (Mr. G. McNamara). -■■-•.

Mr. Scholefield, in proposing the toast of "The Association and Executive Committees" said that the association was formed in 1890. The wages and conditions at the time were deplorable The association had to fight the Depart, ment and the Secretary of the Department. The Government of the day was not favourable, and would not recognise the association as the spokesman of the men. The association's membership was at present 8000. ' Messrs. H. Parnell and J. H.TVlcKenzie replied.

Other toasts honoured were "Parliament," proposed by Mr. H. H. Brown and replied to by the Hon. W. NashKindred Bodies," proposed by Mr. M. w. Cummins; and "The Ladies," proposed by Mr. A. J. McCurdy. Items were given by.Messrs. Muir- ?£ ad> |l orrester, R. Fisher, Noel Walsh, Miss Mary Jepson, Miss Kearns, and Mrs. Forrester.
