PONEKE GIVE ATHLETIC CLOSE CALL

ANOTHER THRILLING FINISH AT THE PARK

The manner in which the championship leaders, Athletic, snatched victory from Poneke in the senior A grade first division Rugby football championship at Athletic Park on Saturday afternoon gave the large crowd of onlookers another big thrill. Poneke looked like the winners until Tindill brought his match-winning boot into effective action, and then Karsten followed suit with a field goal—the third of the match—which "brought down the house. The sterling encounter left Athletic at the top of the ladder. Wellington College Old Boys had a good win over Eastbourne, and thereby remained inclose attendance with the leaders, one point separating these teams on the championship ladder. Marist Brothers Old. Boys had the edge on Petone, and won well, as did Hutt against Johnsonville, while Wellington returned to the winning list in meeting St. Patrick's College Old Boys. The second division championship was settled by Athletics defeat of Wellington College Old. Bdys in a-splendid match at Prince of Wales Park. The result gave Athletic the championship by three points: ■
