AWATEA ON THE WAY
LINER LEAVES CLYDE
BOUND FOR WELLINGTON
: The Union Steam. Ship, Company's new trans-Tasman liner Awatea left the Clyde at 10.30 a.m. yesterday ■en route for Wellington,' and she is due here on September 3. The vessel will travel at economical- speed, and will make her maiden voyage to Wellington, via Curacao and Panama. The liner has a speed of approximately, 23J knots, and this will enable her to maintain a very fast service across ,the Tasman. She will be the most powerfully-en-gined ship owned in the " Southern' Hemisphere, arid for her size will be one of the most powerful ships in- the world. '- . . ...
The ship is propelled by Parsons single-reduction ' geared turbines. Water-tube boilers burn oil fuel under forced draught, all these modern features resulting in high speed under ser-, vice conditions to enable her to maintain 2J-day passages' between Sydney and Auckland or Wellington. The navigational equipment includes a wireless direction-finder, an electric submerged log, a gyro-compass, and a recording echo-sounding machine. An electric ship's progress indicator, will be installed .in the main vestibule. Stowage will include 50,000 cubic feet of refrigerated space! : ■ ; The Awa'tea's first crossing of th!a Tasman will be made from Wellington, sailing on September 15 for Sydney t via Auckland.
