TREE CONSCIOUSNESS
The fixing o£ a' special'day for tree planting, is only an attempt to fix the importance of trees = for all time in the minds of the people, said Mrs. Knox■ .Gilmer, . addressing Wellington East Girls' -.College. It is part of an organised effort, to create "tree consciousness" in the "people, oi New Zealand. In many other countries, not-ably-Japan and Germany, tree -.< consciousness is very strongly developed indeed, and national schemes of afforestation are carefully planned. In Germany no one may' cut down a forest tree without planting two others to replace it*- In Japan, although most of the area of the country is forest covered, timber is imported from abroad, in, order to preserve the forests for the nation. In New Zealand tree consciousness* hardly'exists, it is a notable fact that in many Moslem lands vast areas were stripped of forest, because the Moslem conquerors destroyed trees in order to punish the conquered people. The Parents' Association -has- ar-
ranged a tree-planting at the College for Saturday next at 2.30 p.m.
