OAMARU BOROUGH
COUNCIL ANNIVERSARY

OAMARU, This Day.
The Oamaru Borough today celebrates the seventieth anniversary of the Borough Council. Oamaru was proclaimed a borough on April 3, 1866, and the first council meeting was held on August 6, 1866. It is the third oldest municipality in the Dominion, its predecessors being Dunedin and Queenstown. Otago was the first province to inaugurate municipal government.
The beginnings.of Oamaru date back to 1853. It was proclaimed a "hundred" by the Provincial Government in 18G0, and a town was established in 1802. The population in 1866 was about 900; the population today, including contiguous areas within half a mile of the boundary of the borough is over 9000.
Ho speciaH celebrations of the anniversary are being held in view of the coming Dominion Centennial, but the council is entertaining past mayors, councillors, and prominent men at a dinner tonight. '
