VARIETIES
While the common varieties of montbretias spread like weeds and become a pest in a very short time, the newer hybrids, require some care in cultivation! To succeed with them the ground should "be trenched in the autumn and left rough. A good dressing of decayed leaves should be added at the time and worked in between the top and bottom spits. In August a dressing of unslaked lime should be applied and left on the surface. At planting i time a further, application of decayed leaves might be worked into- the ground as Montbretias love leaf-mould. The best time to plant is in October. The old plants having been lifted in the autumn and the younger parts having been planted in a frame, the young plants should be well rooted and, after hardening off by the.removal of the light whenever weather conditions are favourable, they should be ready for planting out.
Allow eight inches between the plants. Many of the newer hybrids grow to four feet high and have flowers four inches across which are borne in graceful sprays very useful for decoration. .
