HELPFUL HINTS
When lettuces or other green vegetables are being washed, a little vinegar should be added to the water (states the "Manchester Guardian"). It not only kills all worms and grubs, but brings them from among the leaves. It also helps to keep the vegetables crisp and fresh.
A little vinegar sprinkled on redhot cinders in a shovel gives off a pleasant smell and refreshes the atmosphere of a room.
Pantry windows, stone slabs in larders, and the doors and shelves of meat safes should be wiped over frequently in summer weather with vinegar and water to keep flies away.
As a precaution against contamination by flies or dust, fresh meat and fish should be rinsed in vinegar and water before they are cooked, or if they have to be kept overnight before cooking.
