NEW ZEALAND CUP
HOLDERS' HARD TASK
KEEN COMPETITION
(By "Ring.")
The' competition. for the New .Zealand Cup becomes harder each year, and reports on the improving standard indicate that Wellington will have a hard task to retain the cup, which they have held for two years: Detailed news already received shows Canterbury and Southland to be strong challengers this year, with Auckland always giving an excellent display, and Otago, runners-up ■ last year, to be expected to give a good account of themselves. Southland are fielding nine of their ten players who' played in the 1935 tournament, and when it is remembered that Wellington just managed to beat them by one goal, the local supporters will await with interest the Wellington-Southland-match.
This year, also, Southland are taking the precaution of sending their full complement of 12 players. Last year they found it a handicap to have but one emergency. The remaining three players are B. Ingram, L. Sadlier, and D. Lainchbury, only the last-named having represented Southland before. The nine are L. Mehafiy, F. Basstian J. Tyrell, E. Zeame, E. Shepherd,: ' L. Glennie, E. Small, J. Kelly, and 'M Shand.
Southland defeated Otago on Saturday by 18 to 9. V
Canterbury reports that six of last year's players Will be taking the field next month, namely, G. Gluestin (forward), F. Southan, V. Flood, G. Winter (centres), J. Hunter and M. Fancy (defence), X, Stephenson, ex-Poverty Bay and Auckland representative, strengthening the defence, third. Their unorthodox style of play—long passing and forceful intercepting by high jumps, is usually disconcerting at first and their strength is underestimated as a result. In the past, their forwards have been renowned for their spectacular long shots. ~ . " Auckland have high hopes-of regaining their supremacy, and although no definite word has been received, it is expected that their team this year will oe stronger than that of 1935. N.Z. TOURNAMENT REFEREES. Referees appointed to act at the' New Zealand tournament are as follows:— Mr& ?• Crayen (Hawke's Bay), Miss ?• st£ r (2 ta S0)' Mi, ss E. Hunt (Auckland), Mr. D. McCorrhick (Canterbury), Mrs. W. J. McKenzie (Canterbury) Miss V. C. Smith (Southland), Miss L. Sturrock (Wellington). HUTT VALLEY TEAM. The Hutt "Valley team appears strong enough to do well in tho second grade section, and with the close standard of play in South Canterbury Ashburton, Southland minor teams to n rame a ew of the fading teams, Hutt valley should gain some valuable experience through their participation in the tourney. The following players will represent Hutt Valley:— • F. McLaggen, a good forward who occasionally loses possession through playing too close to the line. She was in last year's team also. I. Lambourne is in ,the team for the first time, but deserves her place because of her ability to combine well. K. McNeil], also a newcomer, is showing rapid improvement, and the experience of tournament games should be invaluable to her. - • N. Coffey is a promising forward and can be relied on in emergencies. B. Beasley has represented Wellington senior B, so has a, certain amount of experience to help her side.' She needs to take care not to over-guard.-M. Tyrrall is a good centre; but 'does not always remember to • cover her opponent. ■ ~ "D. Davidson wears Hutt colours for the third time, and this year is playing particularly well. ~ O. Pope, who is playing a muchimproved game, could do better,if she did not waste energy in unnecessary jumping. H. Williams is a good defence,, withthe advantage of height. Her carelessness in taking possession often loses her side the ball. She needs to watch a tendency to over-guard. J. Benton (captain) is in her third representative team, and ,is an excellent all-round' defence, good in positional play. . M. Lambourne represented Hutt Valley in 1934; and is a strong defence. Sheris inclined to over-guard. ,B. Holding, who is up from fifth grade to A grade this season, warrants her inclusion on the fine game she has played this.year. Mrs. DJ Cleland, secretary .of the H.ViB.A., has been appointed manager. Mrs. R. Cole, president of the H.V.8.A., will be the delegate to the New Zealand council, which will commence its meeting in Christchurch on Tuesday, August 25.
