"Smart work by Detective W. Ritchie I resulted in the appearance before Mr. E. D. Mosley, "S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today, of William Henry Homes, alias Pearce, a carpenter-labourer, who pleaded guilty to two charges of theft. He was.charged with stealing two pairs of trousers valued at 255, the property of Patrick's Drapery Stores, and with stealing an overcoat and a pair of gloves valued at £5 2s 6d, the property of Alan Keith lan Purdie.
Detective-Sergeant L. B. HeVell said that yesterday afternoon Detective Ritchie saw the accused walking along Cuba Street and about to turn into a pawnshop, carrying several new pairs of trousers. As the detective^ was questioning the man, a representative of the store came along and identified the'trousers. Further inquiries proved that earlier in the day the accused had pawned an overcoat for 4s.- The coat was the property of a newspaper reporter, and had been stolen f ron\ the court house about 10 a.m. yesterday. "The man is a bad type of sneakthief," said. Detective-Sergeant Revell. "You've a very bad list," said the Magistrate, addressing the accused. "I must put a stop to this."
The accused was convicted on both charges and sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labour on the first, and six months with hard labour on the-! second, the sentences to-be cumulative. -
