THE TERCENTENARY
At the, tercentenary celebrations in September of the Harvard University, one of the oldest and foremost educational institutions in America, the Melbourne University, the University of Tasmania, and the University of New Zealand will be represented by Professor D. B. Copland, Professor of Commerce at Melbourne University. Professor Copland, who is a through passenger to San Francisco by the Maunganui, which arrived yesterday from Sydney, will be present at the celebrations by invitation. %
Prior to the celebrations there will be a conference to which representatives in each field of learning have been invited. The conference will extend over thirteen days, and' men like Professor Einstein and Professor Eddington. of Cambridge, will be present In the .field of economics, philosophy, history, and politics, the general subject will be "The Individual and Authority." There will also be present three • economists—Professor Wesley Mitchell, of Columbia University, Mr. Dennis Robertson, of Cambridge, and Professor Copland. Professor Copland will read a paper on "The State and the Entrepreneur."
The conference will be followed by the celebrations, and the guests will receive an honorary doctor of letters degree. . After the conference Professor Copland will deliver a course of six lectures at the Lowell Institute. Boston, which is a part of Harvard University.
Professor Copland will.make a brief visit to England before returning to Australia in December.
