UNDER-SECRETARIES
NEW APPOINTMENTS
BILL TO BE INTRODUCED
The appointment of under-secretaries to undertake special duties under Ministers of the Crown will be provided for in a Bill which the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M.-.J. Savage) hopes to introduce into the House of Representatives tomorrow.
Mr. Savage, said today that the number of under-secretaries to be appointed would not be limited in the Bill, but their duties would be defined. There would be no weakening of Ministerial authority under the new system.
The Prime Minister stated that the first under-secretary to be appointed under the new legislation would be charged with the administration of the Government's housing scheme. This would be a full-time job, and would call for special qualifications and an abundance of energy. The Government had in mind a man who would measure up to those requirements.
In reply to a question, Mr. Savage said there would be provision for special salaries and allowances for undersecretaries.
