UNEXPLAINED ACCIDENT

DUNEDIN, July 23.

Mr. Robert A. Ward, manager of the Union Company's marine repair works at Port Chalmers, was killed in a railway accident this afternoon. It is not known how the accident occurred, but just after the 1.15 p.m. train from Port Chalmers had passed through the short tunnel between Sawyers Bay and St. Leonards, the driver and firemen felt a bump. The train was pulled up immediately and Mr, .Ward's body, which was terribly mutilated, was discovered.

Mr. Ward had been in the employ of the Union Company for many years, and was at one time one of the company"s chief engineers at sea.
