CIVIL SERVANTS

POLITICAL RIGHTS

GOVERNMENT'S INTENTIONS

Following on his earlier pronouncements regarding his intention to give civil servants full civil and political rights, the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) stated today that legislation was now being drafted with that end in view.

Questioned as to the position of members of the Civil Service who desired to become Parliamentary candidates, Mr. Savage said fhat they would have the right to contest Parliamentary seats after securing t>e necessary leave. It would not be necessary for them to resign their positions. If a civil servant was successful in winning a seat, he. would have to resign from the Service.
