LOOKING TO 1940
PLANS FOR CENTENARY OTACO MAKES A MOVE (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, July 23. Tentative proposals lor the celebration of the centenary, of the Dominion were outlined by the Mayor (the Rev. E. T. Cox) at a meeting of public bodies and social, religious, and commercial organisations held this afternoon. Subsequently the Otago Provincial Centennial Council, representative of all the bodies attending, was formed, and a smaller executive was set up, with the Town Clerk, Mr. G. A._ Lewin, as secretary. The Mayor, Messrs. J. Sutherland Ross, J. J. Marlow, and John Bennetts (Roxburgh) were appointed to represent the council at a conference of the national council to be held at Wellington on August 20. A committee was formed to make historical surveys of the province, and the heads of religious bodies were requested to set up a special council to bring forward suggestions for the appropriate religious observance of the centenary. Local bodies represented at the meeting were asked to make suggestions as to the form which a provincial memorial should take.
