A MEMORIAL LIBRARY

On Tuesday afternoon the Alderson Memorial Library will be officially opened at Scots College by his Excellency the Governor-General, Lord Galway. The library has been presented to the college by Mrs. E. K. Alderson. Hataitai, Wellington, in memory of her late son Oliver, a past pupil of the college, and is probably the most up-to-date and best-equipped school library m New Zealand. Through Mrs. Alderson's generosity several hundred books have been presented, and will be housed in a redecorated and comfortably-furnished room. The equipment includes adjustable steel shelving, writing desk, reading table, and a well-equipped librarian's desk, all of steel and enamelled in grey. A striking feature' is the heavy rubber flooring, which is patterned in the college colours, grey and red. ' Special attention has been paid to lighting, and the flooring, in which the college crest has been inlaid will ensure silence. The handsome oak chairs, again showing the college colours, add a.restful appearance to the appointments. Each chair, including a special revolving chair for the librabears- the carved inscription A.M.L., which will perpetuate. the memory of a loyal son of the college and the generous donor. Throughout the fittings harmonise with the general colour scheme and enhance the air of distinction and restfulhess the library was designed to radiate.
