DEER SKINS

PRICE ANNOUNCED AID TO DESTRUCTION The destruction of New Zealand forests by deer has been a matter of concern for some time, and as a further inducement to hunters to destroy deer the Government has decided to supply cheap ammunition for deer shooting and will assist with the disposal of skins. A notice published in the Gazette last night explains that deer-skins are marketable, and that where private persons experience any difficulty in disposing of such skins the Department of Internal Affairs will accept and pay for skins coming up to requirements. Chamois skins are accepted under the same conditions. | The price for deer skins accepted as first grade - will be ls 7d per lb dry weight. Where skins do not come up to first grade requirements -they will, where considered by the Department's inspector to be marketable, be accepted at a lower rate, or the skins may be entirely rejected. The inspector's decision will be final, and it must be understood that skins are submitted on this understanding and that any skins absolutely rejected will be destroyed. Directions are given in the Gazette as to the skinning, curing, and packing of deer skins. A note is added to the effect that the Department of Internal Affairs, with a view to assisting persons desirous of shooting deer, will supply ammunition at 10s 6d per 100 rounds, freight to be paid by the purchaser.
