FORMERLY THE NORD
The Abel Tasman, which was owned by Mr. H. C. Sleigh, of Melbourne, was purchased from the Jac. Engers Steamship Company, Tonsberg, Norway, in 1933, the vessel at that time being engaged in the timber trade between the Baitic and Australia. Her Australian owners used her in the intercolonial cargo service, Holm and Company acting as the local agents. She has been engaged in this trade since her purchase by the Australian firm.
The Abel Tasman was at the time of her purchase for the intercolonial service named the Nord, and before that was called Mont Blanc and Maria. She was built at Ambacht, Holland, in 1916, and was fitted with wireless and electric light, being classed Al at Lloyd's.
