VOSSELER SHIELD

SCOTTISH TEAM BEATEN

The 10-mile inter-club cross-country harrier race for the Vosseler Shield was held at Lyall Bay on Saturday afternoon.

Boisterous conditions prevailed during the race, but this did not prevent keen competition for individual placings and team honours.

The course was on the heavy side, and the runners, facing a strong northerly wind, found conditions trying when going along the beach and round Moa Point.

I Late arrivals delayed the starting until 3.5 p.m., when the runners, totalling 127, faced the starter, Mr F W Vosseler, donor of the shield. As the runners turned from the road to the beach .rain began to fall and continued throughout the race, the officials being glad when the last man came in just before 5 p.m. Starting on the road, the competitors followed a course along the beach tee I the road at Moa Point, over the hill jto Kingsford Smith Street, Endeavour Street. Onepu Road, and again over the same course, finishing down at the beach end of Freyberg Street. Teams were entered by the Scottish Harriers, Brooklyn, Olympic, Wellington, Htitt, Methodist, Presbyterian, and University Clubs, the first ten men in each club to finish constituting the team for points honours. J. Riddington (Scottish) was the first in alfißm°me^ CoVerill S- the 10"mile coul'se in 66min 38sec, which was good time under trying conditions. Second place went to A. L. Stevens. (Scottish) who was some 400 yards back. His t/me was 67mm 55sec. G. Prosser (Brooklyn) was third, in 62min 41sec In the teams race, carrying with ii *c Vosseler Shield, Brooklyn defeated the holders, Scottish.
