KEEN PLAY IN WET WEATHER

ATHLETIC TAKE LEAD IN TOP GRADE

Although rain came at the wrong time on Saturday afternoon for the local senior A grade Rugby matches to produce the attractive football expected, 'there were some very sound displays under the wet conditions, and the results brought about a further interesting development in the keen running to championship honours. Wellington College Old Boys, who, with an unbeaten record in the second round, were leading in the top division, encountered very strong opposition from Petone, who gave an impressive performance, as they had done on their previous visit to Athletic Park, and this time they succeeded in vanning, though not by much. The setback to Old Boys accounted for an important change in the championship position, the leadership being gained by Athletic, who, though hard-pressed by St. Patrick's College Old Boys, were among Saturday's winners. Poneke repeated their ' last year's second-round performance against Johnsonville. in winning _by 18 points to' 6, and this brought them level with • Wellington College Old Boys in second place on the ladder, only one point behind Athletic. In registering their second win, Marist Brothers Old Boys gave a convincing display against Eastbourne, and there was also something of a surprise in the very decisive manner in which Hutt accounted for Wellington. Matches in the second division of the senior A grade resulled generally as expected, Athletic and Wellington College Old Boys \ ■ holding their places as joint leaders. ' There will be another series of championship matches next Saturday,. and then the eagerly- awaited • visit from Hawke's Bay will take place.
