Active work is reported on the extension of the 150 ft level at the Golden Progress mine into the east The mine has been completely dewaterp'i underground .workings have been repaired in accordance with the Mines Department's requirements, and rock firm plant and air compressor have been installed. The latter has been lured. A contract has also been let 7,S r *£? drivi«g of 300 ft at the price of 27s 6d per foot. The contractors will be on the ground this week, and w:l) be commencing work at the beginnins of next week. "
PAROA GOLD. | Paroa Gold, Limited, a company formed to mine an area at Paroa near! Greymouth, has been registered. Capital is £12,000, in Is shares. It is proposed to work the area by means of gravel pumps, a method which has been adopted at Macrea's Flat, in Central Otago. The promoting company is New Zealand Mining Investments. Ltd., which is reported as having subscribed for £ 1000 worth of- the contri^ buting issue. The area to be worked is calculated to provide operations for up to ten years, and 44 prospecting bores put down on the eighty-four acres comprising the area revealed average values of Is 4£d a yard, with gold at £6 an ounce. WAITAHU MINE. W. A. Mitson and Co., secretaries of the Waitahu Gold Mining Company, Ltd., report regarding the sluicing operations on No. 6 paddock:—Elevating operations on No. 5 paddock completed March 30. Elevator was erected on No. 6 paddock on April 3, paddock being completed on June 3. The total possible number of shifts of eight hours each from April 3 to June 3 was 157, the n.umber of shifts lost through shortage of water 26J, and the number of shifts worked 130 J. The number of shifts water was used tor elevating operations was 115 .(919 hours), and the number of shifts water was used for ground sluicing 151 (124 hours'), making a, total of 130 i (1043 hours).
The gold won from elevating operations on No. 6 paddock was IGGoz Bdwt of a value at £7 10s per ounce of £1248. The measurement of No.,G paddock was 3380 square yards and the cubic yardage 88,000, of which 44,000 cubic yards Were removed by stripping and 44,000 yards elevated at an average rate of 48 cubic yards per hour. , The values recovered from No. G paddock • were as follows:—Average value per cubic yard elevated, 63d; average value over-all, 3Jd; average value of bottom 6ft of wash, 3s Bd. ■The water supply between April 3 and June 3 was very poor. Consequently stripping of No. 7 paddock could not be carried out at the same time. Since June 3 water used for stripping work and elevator set up in the new paddock.
