AUCKLAND TRANSPORT

MORE HANDS NEEDED

ANNUAL COST £40,000

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, This Day.

Arrangements, which, it is expected, will be approved, were made by the Auckland Transport Board in regard to changes in staff necessitated by the shorter working week. In all, 145 new hands will be required to take the place of conductors who are to become motormen, and to fill other vacancies. The total annual increased wages bill will be in the vicinity of £40,000.

■ The introduction of the shorter working week may mean the. striking of a levy over the board's area, as the only, other alternative, is to raise fares. There is provision under the Act for the striking of a levy, but it has not hitherto been enforced. .
