TRENTHAM TRACK NOTES

(By "Rangratira.")

With few horses claiming' engagements before the opening of the Christchurch Racing Carnival next month, there has been little fast . work attempted on the Trentham tracks this week. Arctic King will be going to Awapuni next week, but he did only strong pacing this morning. The ground was deep in raud : after yesterday's rain; P. Burgess will again ride Arctic King, also Maestro at the Rangk tikei Hunt Meeting on Wednesday. : Joiirnet is. still at Trentham in charge of his trainer W. C. Griffiths, but he will go down south as "soon as he has' a mate to travel with. He looks none the worse for his recent racing, but will require to improve on his Trentham efforts to have much chance in the Grand National- Hurdles.

Diamond, with R. Smith up, was sent over six fences of the country this morning and he gave his usual faultless exhibition, 'in appearance he is lighter than he was prior to contesting the Wellington Steeplechase; indeed he seems to have fallen away a lot in his quarters, but T. K. George is very capable in bringing his charges back to the'right condition on the eve of their important engagements.

Billy Boy is going along nicely with the Grand National in view, and his owner-trainer (R. W. A. Lewis) is confident he will beat the majority of his younger rivals in the big Riccarton race. He says there is no horse in this year's, field,, except possibly Diamond, who can jump faster than the old champion, .particularly.;,over really big fences. . ■

Although Red Sun has been scratched for his southern engagements, the gelding has made quicker : recovery from his injured-joint than was anticipated. However," now he has no immediate racing' ahead; his ownertrainer (J. W. Lowe) ■■: has -"blistered him and is giving him, a short spelL His stablemate, Good Sun/ .who. contracted a slight cold, is' also spelling for a few weeks. V ' :

Diamond's mates ■.•south' will ,be Korero and Boomerang, and- possibly Free Gold. Korero will be ridden by S. Wilson, but no rider has yet been fixed for Boomerang in- the Winter Cup. All these horses are in good order. ■ ,

Two horses to be turned put since the Wellington Meeting are Vinco'and Camilla Horn. Vinco, who was disappointing over the . hurdles, is to have a two months' spell. Camilla Horn has gone back to her owner, but she will possibly be sold and returned to work,'as she gave: considerable promise as a jumper at the recent meeting. . '_■ ■'■ ■'• "' ' "'•"..■"■'. ' ''

One of Sir Thomas Wilford's. first calls-after his arrival from London yesterday was to see his horse Youssipof. Youssipof is now working along well again after a slight setback,' and he will probably be > schooled. next week with a- ■' view to making a hurdler of him. ~ .'•'.'

The Foxlaw stallion' Foxlight,. who arrived from England early.. in the week, is now temporarily quartered with H. B. Lorigan, but. Mr.. J. Mulvaney will take him over to Masterton when the breeding season begins. Foxlight is a fine stamp of stallion and he has favourably impressed those who have: inspected him since his arrival at Treniham. . .
