CONDITIONS IN SAMOA
RECOMMENDATIONS
BY MISSION
MAU CONSIDERING

The principal recommendations which will be made to the Prime Minister by the goodwill mission to Samoa on its return to New Zealand were disclosed by the Hon. F. Langslone today at'an important meeting with representatives of all sections of the Samoan people. x
Mr. Langstone.. said that the delegation proposed to make recommendations to the Prime Minister as follows:—
(1) To increase the number of Samoan representatives in the Legislative Council from two to four.
(2) To increase 'the number of native advisers to the Government from two to three.
(3) To pay members of the Legislative Council, other than official members, an honorarium of £50 a year.
(4) To pay native advisers an honorarium of \£loo a year.
(5) To arrange for the setting up of a finance committee consisting of three representatives of the Samoan race and , one of the European community to confer with the Administration Treasurer and Secretary of Native Affairs on matters of taxation and revenue. '■•.-.
(6) To publish in the Samoan language full information concerning the public accounts. ,
(7) To permit the Legislative Council to discuss the Estimates before their submission to the Government for approval and to make recommendations on any item. '
(8) To extend the system of education in Government schools by providing for free tuition to a higher standard of attainment and for the establishment of secondary schools.
(9) To increase the number of doctors and nurses in order to bring medical and hospital treatment within the reach of every Samoan.
(10) To secure the services of a qualified dentist and to provide free dental treatment for school children. (11) To arrange for a census of the people to be taken this year. The recommendations were submitted to the meeting as a basis of agreement between the whole of the Samoan people and the Administration.
Faumauina, president of the Mau, said that they welcomed the opportunity of discussing their problems with the delegation, but would appreciate a little time to cc-sidcr the proposals of the Minister.
Mr. Langstone said that the request was quite reasonable, and it was decided to adjourn till tomorrow.
