PLANTING OF TREES

A that considerable tree planting, had been; carried out was made by. the caretaker <Mr. D. Beban) m his report to the Hutt Park Committee last evening. I Pinus insignis from the nursery had1 peen used to plant a double row along the northern boundary, and three or four rows along the southern boundary, approximately 1500 young trees being^used. The race track boundary had also been planted with pine. Trees were, on order for the eastern bank or. the .Waiwetu Stream, and also for shelter belts for the north-and south ends pi the picnic and ■■- campirie ground. This planting would be carried out shortly. v F2 lr ,men wefe at Present, engaged on the Waiwetu Stream job, and they were making fair progress. Exceptionally high tides had hindered their work lately. One tree had been felled to make space for the' building of a men's shower and hand basin. It would be necessary to fell three more trees to provide- fo* extensions to the bridge. The superintendent of reserves at Lower Hutt (Mr. E. Hutt) reported that the gaps in last season's tree planting had been filled. All trees planted dur- j ing last.season had been cleaned and' cultivated. A start would be made with the planting of the shelter hedges I during, the next few days. About 200 trees of pinus • radiata would be required for planting on the eastern side of the stream. -

Mr. Hutt was authorised to procure the necessary trees. Comment was made on the improved state of the finances. There were good receipts from tennis, mainly due to the mild winter.

Inquiries are to be made about providing canoes for hiring on the Waiwetu Stream. The secretary will report at the next meeting. It was decided to put in hand immediately extensions to the lodge and to the facilities for showers.

The question of the erection of a wen- was held over until the next meeting. .
