At the Leichhardt Stadium tonight in a 12-round bout, the New Zeailander, Jack Jarvis, 9st 51b, was disqualified in the eighth round for striking htis opponent, Hughie Mehegan, 9st 71bi, after the gong had sounded.
The incident created a sensation. Both boxers connected with .right crosses to the chin, simultanaously about 20 seconds before the hell. Jarvis lost his balance temporarily' and Mehegan went down for four. Ha rose and Jarvis was raining blows oib. him. When the bell went Mehegan diwpped his hands, but Jarvis continued * fighting. The referee intervened, disqualified him, and awarded the contest to Mehegan, who at that stage looted a beaten man. The crowd was greatly excited. A large section did not Eiear the bell, and it was fairly apparent that Jarvis had not heard it.
