REDUCED LOADING

TWO MAIN HIGHWAYS

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

MASTERTON, July 15. Although some opposition was expressed, the Masterton County Council, at its meeting yesterday, decided to approve of a proposal by the Commissioner of Transport that the classification of the Wellington-Napier and Mas-terton-Castlepoint main highways be altered from class two to class three. This will mean that traffic will be restricted to overall loads of 6£ tons, against 8 tons as at present.

The chairman, Councillor W. I. Armstrong, said tilt Wellington-Napier road was a very important highway, and He was of the opinion that it should remain an open road. To alter the classification from class two to class three would have a big efTect on the travelling public. The change would mean that traffic would be restricted to overall loads of 6i tons, as compared with 8 tons as at present. He did not favour the proposal.

Councillor H. H. Mawley said it was a scheme to divert all long-distance traffic to the railway.

Councillor Armstrong: There is something in that.

Councillor Mawley added that he did not think the change would make much difference cna way or the other, except that it would make for uniformity.

Councillor P. R. Welch: It looks as if it will be out of our hands within six months. I think we should fall into line with the proposal.

After further discussion it was decided to approve of . the suggested change of classification.
