FORTY-HOUR WEEK

The Foxton Borough Council has I decided to adopt the 40-hour week as from August 1 and from that date the I council office will be- closed on Satuf.days. • ■ I At the previous meeting the coun- . cil decided to ask for exemption from ' the 40-hour week for its gas works as iit was considered. the shorter hours ! would seriously embarrass the council's finances. The Minister, however, replied regretting that he was unable to grant an exemption. i The clerk reported on a conference ;of county gasworks representatives i held in Wellington recently to conisider the position, and said that finality had not been reached. Thousands of small fish are being dropped from aeroplanes to restock Quebec lakes. While in the air, the fish live without water, in order to lighten the aeroplane's load: They are, ■ kept alive by oxygen.
