TELEGRAPH HOURS
THE SATURDAY CHANGE
LITTLE BUSINESS AFFECTED
As was announced yesterday, eight o'clock closing on Saturday night is being adopted for telegraphic business at fourteen post offices in the Dominion where the hours of attendance have been until 9 p.m. . This change comes into force oh Saturday, and follows an investigation c.t the telegraphic business offering between 3 and 9 p.m. at the fourteen offices concerned. It was found that' the attendance of the staff was not justified by the amount of service which the public required during that time, the number of messages averaging only 39 for each Saturday night during May for the- whole of the offices remaining open until 9 p.m.
This is another indication of the changing nature of the communication business handled by the Post Office, for while the telegraphic branch was almost idle during the period under notice, the telephone exchanges were busy. The 'curtailment, of hours does not reduce facilities for communication in New Zealand owing to the extensive nature of telephone facilities provided during the whole 24 hours of the day.
The offices affected by the change are:—Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin,' Gisborne, Greymouth, Hastings, Invercargill, Masterton, New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Timaru, Wanganui, Wellington, -and Westport.
