WORSE THAN EVER

HERZOGIN CECILIE'S

SITUATION

(Received July 16, 1.50 p.m.)

LONDON,. July 15.

Captain Erikson confirms that the keel of the barque Herzogin Cecilie was broken in the damage dot* during stormy weather last week. The beach. was reputed to be firm sand, but the ebb' tide around the hull revealed a rock, and the position of the vessel :s now worse than when she first grounded.

The Herzogin Cecilie, a Finnish fourmasted barque, went on to the rocks oft the Devon coast at the end of April. The first attempt to refloat her in June was unsuccessful, then she was refloated by two tugs, and it was stated that she was to be towed to Salcombe for repairs. She was lightened for this operation by dumping overboard several hundreds tons of her cargo of grain.
