• REMARKS'IN ENGLAND
(Jlly Telegraph.—Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, This Day.
Strong criticism of remarks reported to nave been made in England
during the present visit of the Bishop of V/aikato, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Cherrington,. concerning the "heathen condition of! the Maoris in the Waikato and King Country was voiced at a meeting of the Methodist Maori Ministerial Synod this morning.
"The Bishop does not know the Kii.ig Country Maori conditions as his Church has little to do with the Mjioris there, and he should be silent where the Methodist Church is doing aJK the work to uplift the people," said one speaker. The Bishop favoured hotels in the King Country,- but both the Methodist and Ratana Churches were unanimously of the opinion that hotels there would ruin the Maoris.
Synod agreed with Dr. Cherrington concerning the need for more money to help to develop the Gospel in the ■y/aiKato and King Country, but added tihat there was a great need for nairsing and medical attention,- also religious and moral education among the D laoris.
