other two meetings are also avents that might be allotted rather larger stakes than at present. The Shorts Handicap in October would then become a more important link in the1 series culminating in the C.J.C. Stewards', and by that stage of the season there are usually plenty of class sprinters under preparation. The Stewards' Handicap was on its face well endowed last week in being allocated the same stake as the Whyte Handicap; but the argument for a considerable advance in the Whyte prize has already been stated, and such increase would allow room for continued improvement in the stake for the. principal sprint race at the "Winter Meeting. Such larger prizes further would be an. inducement for owners to keep horses in New Zealand1 who might otherwise be sent across the Tasman.
