CUT RESTORATIONS
HAIRDRESSERS' CHARGES
CONFERENCE CALLED
A conference of the New Zealand Retail Tobacconists' and Hairdressers' Federation is being called for late this month when the effect on the trade of the restoration of the 1931 conditions and the applications already made to the Arbitration Court for the 40-hour week will be considered. Matters arising out of the Shops and Offices Amendment Act will also come up for
discussion,
"As far as Wellington is concerned the position is that there is a hairdressers' award in existence covering an area of twenty-five miles from the Chief Post Office," stated Mr. R. F. Franklin, secretary of the Wellington Provincial Tobacconists' and Hairdressers' Association, today. "This being so, and in accordance with the Prime Minister's pronouncement to restore wages to the 1931 level, with which pronouncement the Wellington Provincial Association is fully in accord, assistants' wages in this district have been increased to that level as from July 1. This is a substantial advance on the wage formerly paid. It must be borne in mind that other costs such as laundry, etc., have also already increased and that the trade will be faced with a reduction in hours, in any case to 44 hours per -week as from September 1. The present award provides for 148.
'.'The Wellington Provincial Association definitely favours better wages and better conditions for all engaged in the hairdressing trade, and in reverting to the 1931 scale of wages it becomes necessary in turn to consider bringing into being some scale of stabilised saloon charges based on 1931 conditions also, which will safeguard and ensure the employees being able to enjoy the basic wage reverted to. "However, the whole question is one which will be very fully considered at the forthcoming federation conference."
In reply to a question Mr. Franklin said he was unable to say whether it was likely the charge for haircutting would be increased from Is 3d to Is 6d.
