THE USUAL VICTORY

HOGAN'S REPRESENTATIVE

Braw Lad gave the Washdyke trainer P. T. Hogan his usual win on his regular trips to Trentham when he justified the hot favouritism for which he was sent out in the Crofton Hack Handicap. After driving up on the inner of the pacemakers to take charge at the false .rail he had a resolute challenge from Royal Feast to repulse, but he always held a little in reserve and he was equal to scoring comfortably by hall a length. Though he ran so consistently at last week's meeting, Braw Lad has been more or less a disappointment in the South Island, but probably he has improved since Hogan received him, as he was also a winner last month at Dunedin. He is a five-year-old brown gelding by Paladin from I the Benef orm—Freestone mare Shiela Gala, a family of poor account in recent years, and he is now racing in the colours of.Mr. D. J. Finnegan, the owner also of Lycidas, who secured him some time ago from his breeder, Mr. T. Crozier. Like most of his sire's stock he appears to favour easy going.

Royal - Feast's - improvement was hardly anticipated, as previously he has not benefited with racing at a meeting. On Saturday he followed the winner through and gave him no opportunity of letting up, though he never really looked like pulling back his rival.

• These two horses left the others in the straight, finishing four lengths ahead of Ngatirahiri, who was always well up in the running but never improved. Professional assisted Baffle in setting the early pace, but she weakened into fourth. Gaen was running on from the rear, but Granville and Happy Hunting ran poorly, and De Trop was again a complete disappointment.i-. .?-- ~ : -."'. '.- ~ ■'■-':, ;.:*■"■;.
