The Anglican Synod of the Diocese of Wellington was engaged last evening in the consideration of the annual report of the Diocesan Social Service Board. Canon Percival James, the Primate's Commissary, presided. The report stated that all the institutions dealt with had shown considerable progress during the year. In every home capacity had been taxed to the utmost, and applications exceeded the number for which provision could be made. In prr/.-nting the report, Mr. H. A. Huggins said that a low overhead cost of maintenance was shown in the statement of accounts.

The president of thc**board, Canon James, made an appeal to the parishes for strong support of the good work being done in the church's homes. In the report of the Wellington City Mission it was stated that during the year 88,697 meals had been given and 24,942 beds had been provided by the men's shelter. The debenture holders had gratuitously cancelled £650 of the debt. A campaign had been started to repay the balance of £7300, and to rebuild the old.mission houses. The members of the young people's societies and classes connected with the mission numbered 346. The debit balance on the men's shelter was £1327; on the boys' hostel, £287; and on the old people's meals, £101.' The work of feeding, clothing, and housing the poor went steadily on, and their spiritual welfare was also a matter of constant care. -.'•-. . , It was reported that an increased number of seE|ien were attending the 'Mission to Seamen. Seamen in disj tress had been relieved, seamen in hosjpital visited, entertainment had been [provided, and hospitality given. i Brief reports were also given of the progress and work of the following institutions:—Anglican Boys' Homes, St. I Barnabas Babies' Home, All Saint's Children's Home (Palmerston North), and St. Mary's Guild Home. . The amount expended during the year in the upkeep of the service institutions of the diocese was £UUbo.
