EMPIRE BROADCASTS
8.8.C. IMPROVEMENTS (Received June 30, 10.20 a.m.) LONDON, June 29. The Government has accepted the recommendation of the Broadcasting Committee that an Empire broadcasting service shall be expressly authorised and developed. A London cable on March 18, after the publication of the Committee's report, stated that, questioned by the Australian Associated Press agency concerning the committee's references to Empire transmissions, Sir Stephen Tallents, Controller of Public Relations for the 8.8.C., said that the Broadcasting Corporation entirely agreed that there should be development of the Empire transmissions. The corporation was considering schemes whereby the broadcasting hours to the Dominions would be extended, and was also paying attention to the developing of the engineering side, so as to enable clearer reception. The committee's recommendation that the corporation should receive a larger portion of the licence revenue would be most helpful in the development and improvement of the Empire transmissions. Corporation officials said there was reason to expect an improvement in reception in the future. Short-wave transmission was approaching a good "eleven-year (sunspot) cycle." No doubt by the time of the next bad cycle the experts would have overcome all the difficulties which Australia and New Zealand in particular suffered. Improvement in the programmes was receiving the closest attention.
