STRANGLED BODY
FOUND IN WARDROBE SEARCH FOR SUSPECT SYDNEY SENSATION United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received June 20, 10.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The woman occupant of a residence ia Clarence Street, close to the Sydney Harbour Bridge, made a grim discovery this afternoon when she called a locksmith to open a wardrobe in an upstairs flat. She was confronted with the body of a woman who had apparently been strangled about a week ago. The body has been identified as that of Mabel Patricia Goodman, aged 36, a single woman who was formerly employed as a waitress. Detectives were quickly on the scene, but did not touch the body until a close examination had been made by the Government pathologist, Dr. Sheldon, who discovered a strong cord strained tightly round the dead woman's throat, sufficient in itself to cause death. He also noticed injuries to her head from which it would appear that the victim was first rendered insensible with a heavy instrument and then strangled. The keeper of the flats told the police that a. man occupied the flat until about a week ago, when he disappeared With the keys, including the one for the wardrobe. The dead woman was a complete stranger to the other occupants. The police are making every effort to locate the man. The woman was fully dressed and in a huddled position on her back. There was a severe wound in her forehead. The identity of the man is also unknown, but a description of the pair is being circulated to all police.
