MAKING OF AIRCRAFT
AUSTRALIAN SYNDICATE MOST MODERN PLANT CANBERRA, June 18. At the invitation of the Commonwealth Government, a syndicate has been formed to float a company with a nominal capital of £1,000,000 for manufacturing . aircraft and aero engines in Australia. The Prime Minister (Mr. J. A. Lyons) stated tonight that the syndicate includes the Broken Hill Proprietary, Ltd., Broken Hill Associated Smelters, Ltd., and General Motors-Holdens. The factory will be equipped with the most modern plant. According to a cable published yesterday, the Minister of Defence (Mr. R. A. Parkhill), in a broadcast address on "Australia's Aerial Defences," said that at present it is difficult to obtain delivery of orders for aeroplanes placed in Britain. In time of emergency the possibility of getting aircraft from Britain would be almost negligible. It was the Government's aim, therefore, to establish an aircraft industry in Australia, and action had been taken to achieve that result in the near future.
