SCIENCE AND CEMENT ■. ♦ '■"Scientific Searchlights on Cement" was the title of a lecture delivered by Mr. L. R. L. Dunn, of the Dominion Laboratory, to the technilqgical section of the Wellington Philosophical Society on Wednesday evening. The historical development of cements was sketched by Mr. Dunn before dealing with the chemical constituents of modern Portland cement responsible for its special characteristics. He showed how a judicious proportioning of the raw materials could control the strength, setting time, heating, and durability of the final product to meet the varying [\ requirements of the engineer, instancing the special research for a cement suitable for the construction of the Boulder Dam in U.S.A. . The talk was illustrated by slides, and was followed by considerable discussion. At the conclusion a film showing the manufacture of Portland cements was shown.
