MR. W. I. DEAVOLL APPOINTED
The appointment of Mr. W. I. Deavoll to be secretary of the Wellington Education Board in succession to Mr. E. S. Hylton, who is retiring on superannuation, was confirmed by ,the board, sitting in committee, this morning. Mr. Deavoll is at present private secretary to the Minister of Education.
Altogether Mr. Deavoll, who is 45 years of age, has been in the Public Service thirty years. He was educated at the Timaru Main School, the Glen-iti School, and the Timaru Boys' High School. On leaving the High School he started employment with
the Westport Coal Company, and two years later he joined the Railway Department. In 1914 he was transferred to Wellington as confidential clerk to Mr. R. W. McVilly at the Railways Head Office. He served there until h,e enlisted for active service in 1916, and he resumed his position with Mr. McVilly on his return from the war in 1919. Mr. Deavoll was then released for twelve months to act as secretary of the Railway Board of Appeal. He was appointed for special work in connection with the visit to New Zealand of his Royal Highness the frince of Wales, now King Edward I VIII.
In January, 1921, Mr. Deavoll was appointed private secretary to the Hon. J. (now Sir Parr, who was then Minister of Education, and for fifteen years has served each successive Minister of Education in the same capacity, in addition to dealing with work connected with other portfolios. Mr, Deavoll was appointed to act as secretary of the Parliamentary Research Education Committee during the investigations made a few years ago. He has served under six successive Ministers of Education as private secretary. Mr. Deavoll is to take up his new duties on September 1.
