PETONE BOROUGH

EMPLOYEES' CONDITIONS

COUNCIL'S DECISION

The Petone Borough Council last evening considered the representations of outside employees on the question of certain conditions and the 40-hour week.

The report of the works committee stated that Messrs. Butler and O'Grady, representing the Wellington Builders' and General Labourers' Union, and Messrs. S. Jones, W. McKeitch, and Haines, representing the Petone Borough Council employees/waited upon the committee to arrive at an agreement with regard to working conditions between the council and its employees. A round-table discussion took place, and the committee agreed with the schedule of wages and conditions attached to the report. The committee, after due consideration, decided "that the wages and conditions enumerated be recommended for endorsement by the council, and that the operation of same should come into effect from September 1, 1936." The committee's decision had been . imparted to the men's deputation, but they refused to consider the date mentioned. No finality was reached in this direction, and the meeting terminated. On retiring Mr. Butler stated that failure to agree upon this last point repudiated'all the previous items agreed to, and it would be the intention of the union immediately to cite the borough council as parties for an award through the Court.

Last evening, Mr. Butler and 14 members of the outside staff waited on the council. Mr. Butler and Messrs. S. V. Haines, W. McKeitch, and S. G. Jones asked for special conditions for overtime and for dirt money, extra pay for working in wet places, the supply of overalls, meal allowances, and the operation of the 40-hour week to take effect immediately.

After the deputation withdrew the council discussed the matter further and adopted the works committee's report.
