CHANCES IN AUSTRALIA

The Australian Broadcasting Commission has decided to appoint Federal controllers of music and of productions. The controller of music will be Mr. W. G. James, at present acting manage? for Victoria, and the controller of productions will be Mr. P. D. Clewlow, at present .controller of productions and studio manager in the Victorian branch. Mr. James is a brilliant pianist, who has appeared at Queen's Hall as a celebrity artist in a season when Kreisler, Melba, and other world-famous artists were engaged. His compositions are widely known, perhaps the most familiar being his six Australian bush songs, which are frequently heard over the air, sung by Peter Dawson. He has been in broadcasting for nearly ten years, and his knowledge of music and programme building will be invaluable in his new sphere. , Mr. F. D. Clewlow has had wide experience in broadcasting, including the supervision of variety, vaudeville, and musical comedy, as well as the more serious forms of drama. His association with national broadcasting dates, back five years. Prior to his appointment as producer, he was producing repertory in Melbourne. He visited Sydney last year as adjudicator in the elocution section of the city of Sydney eisteddfod. These appointments have necessitatother changes. Mr. B. W. Kirke, manager for Western Australia, has been appointed acting manager for Victoria, and Mr. C. Charlton, studio manager in Sydney has been appointed manager for Western Australia. Another appointment is that of Mr. Howard Carr as music editor. Mr. Carr, who has achieved fame overseas as a composer and orchestrater, both in the fields of serious music and musical comedy, is also a very able conductor. He has joined the commission's staff as a writer of original music for the various productions, and will also be responsible for orchestrations and adaptations of major works in both the serious and light fields of music. It is expected Mr. James will join head office staff before the end of June, but Mr. Clewlow will remain in Melbourne for some months longer.
