LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL
The Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m.
The Administration Amendment Bill, introduced by the Hon. R. McCallum, was read a first time. Moving the committal of the Shops and Offices Amendment Bill, the Leader of the Council (the Hon. M. Fagan) said that the Bill was in line with other Government Bills dealing with the Labour laws. Sir James Allen said that trustee ~ companies had as much right to be -i exempted from the hours provision as had solicitors' and mining companies' offices and others. Extra time was needed beyond the office hours.
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES ' The House of Representatives met at 2.30 p.m. today. In an urgent question addressed to the Minister of Finance (the Hon. W. Nash) the Hon. J. G. Cobbe (National, Oroua) asked whether in view of the Government's intention to postpone the Mortgage Adjustment Bill, he would inform the House if arrangements now being made would be affected by the proposed legislation. He said there were many farmers desiring to arrange mortgages at the old mortgage rate not exceeding 4J per cent. The Minister said it was not possible to determine the procedure that would be followed in adjusting mortgages, but there did not appear to be any cause for uncertainty on the part of lenders who wanted to lend money at 4} per cent., provided there was the ordinary margin of security. The Transport Licensing Amendment Bill was returned from the Legislative Council with amendments. On the motion of the Minister of • Transport (the Hon. R. Semple), the amendments were agreed to.
