CLERKS AND UNIONS
(To the Editor.! Sir,—l crave space in your valuable column to voice my sentiments regarding the Clerks' Union. lam not quite ® certain if I qualify to speak on the subject as I am not a teacher, neither am I a secretary of a trade union nor am I allied to the Trades Hall—l am only a clerk and trust I am not presuming by saying a few words on our behalf. , There has been quite a lot of pub- * licity given lately as to whether clerks should have a union particular to their own class of work or whether' they | should be grouped as one big' grand union. No mention, however, has been made by any of the above authorities as to what use the funds of such a union will be put. lam one -of the mugs who will require to pay 5s membership and probably Is per week for life—to what end? I reckon it is people like myself, those who have to | pay, who should decide whether our hard-earned cash goes into a bottom- ( less pit or be put to a better use, such y as for sick leave, retiring . allowance, etc. ] This controversy regarding, a trade union for clerks will only be settled 1 when the above-mentioned authorities j come out in the open and tell New Zealand for what purpose the huge ' annual income received from such, a union will be used. Personally I , am too old in the head to be hood- . winked by all this bogy of company unions and interference by employers when I feel that underlying all, these ' statements might be a desire to obtain : funds for purposes which we do not ■ approve, and L say definitely that it is up to. every clerk in New Zealand to : demand an answer to the foregoing question, or have the oportunity to de- ; cide it for themselves.—l am, etc., I NO RISK.
