M. Reardon will again be •on The Ranger in the steeplechase at Otaki tomorrow. Mr. T. D. ,Chapman, an old-time rider, is at present assisting A. E. Browne with the "Endeavour Lodge" horses during J. W. Lowe's absence in Australia.
R. Hatch, who has been in Melbourne for some time, past, is getting a team of horses together at Caulfield, the first members being two maidens, Blazer and Fire King.
The four-year-old Limond mare Variant, an unlucky performer always just missing the big prizes, though she won the New Zealand Oaks, has been retired to the stud.
The hunter Monteloo, in D. McCauley's stable, has failed to stand up to training and he is to be returned to his owner. His presence would have assisted the Otaki steeples fields.
The following riding engagements have been made for the Ashburton Meeting on Saturday:—G. H. Humphries, Wino, Culotte; L. J. Ellis, Impossible, Silver Coat, Golden, Dart; and J. Veevers, Lady Kate and Night Wind.
The New Zealand jockey A. Driscoll arrived at Auckland at the weekend by the Monterey on a six weeks' holiday. Driscoll is recuperating after an injury received at Flemington recently.
The Biccarton trainer D. Cotton has recommissioned Grey Honour, who has been oft' the scene since he lost form in the spring. He has not been turned out, and is practically ready to resume active work at any time.
Streamline is having a short rest, which was necessitated after he cut one of his legs when schooling last week. The mishap should not seriously affect his preparation for the Grand National Meeting. Cosmic Ray, who is due to make her race debut at Otaki tomorrow, is a three-year-old bay filly by Sky Blue from the Provocation mare Vivation. She is being raced on lease by Mr. J. O. Houlihan, of Levin.
The jockey C. G. Goulsbro', rider of Hunting Mars, was cautioned by the stewards of the Auckland Racing Club for cutting in too sharply passing the Ave furlongs post after the running of trie first division of the Jervois Handicap at Ellerslie last Saturday. When Lavington broke down during the running of an open handicap at Mart.on in the spring he was given away by Mr. H. L. Nathan, to Mr. H. F. Wood, part-owner of Autopay, but he has apparently made some recovery, as he is an acceptor for the Otaki I Meeting tomorrow. He is now being prepared at Porirua. Prince of Orange's trainer, A. J. (Julian, was one of the best crosscountry riders of his time. He won the Great Northern Steeplechase ou Loch Fyne, the Great Northern Hurdles on Napper. the Grand National Hurdles on Trcsham and Morning, the Hawke's Bav Steeplechase on Audax and The Spaniard, the Napier Steeplechase on The Spaniard, the Wanganui Steeplechase on Jack Pot. and the Wellington Steeplechase on Haydn, these being i among -his most important successes in the saddle.
