Mr. A. W. FitzGibbon, who has taken over the management of the Hotel St. George, in succession to Mr. G. Bassant, was for nine years in charge of the Masonic Hotel, Nelson, recognised as a leading hotel in that district. Prior to that, he was for many years in control of the providoring department of several of the Royal Mail steamers running between Australia, New Zealand, Vancouver, and San Francisco. During the war he was responsible for catering for thousands of New Zealand, British, and American troops.

Mr. W. K. McAlpine has been elected chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board. The retiring chairman (Mr. E. J. Howard, M.P.) held the office for two years. Mr. R. T. McMillan was elected deputy chairman.

The Rev. C. Maclaverty, who formerly served in Wellington diocese as vicar of Island Bay, and is now vicar of St. Saviour's, Lyttelton, will succeed the Rev. Neville Watkins as vicar of St. John's, Hororata, in the Christchurch diocese.

Mr. F. H. Taylor, of Wellington, returned today by the Wanganella from a combined business and holiday trip to Sydney and Melbourne.

Mr. C. F. Eskell. general manager in New Zealand for Universal Films, returned today by the Wanganella from Sydney.

Dr. L. Bosshard, D.Sc., of South Africa, and Mrs. Bosshard and son, arrived from Australia today by the Wanganella. Dr. Bosshard, who has visited New Zealand before, intends to write a book about geology in the Dominion.
