GUTS RESTORATION
NOT AN EASY TASK
SEPARATE BILL REQUIRED
PENSIONS ALSO
The preparation of legislation to provide for the restoration of wage levels to the 1931 standard is proving a more difficult task than was at first expected.
The Prime Minister (the Kt. Hon. M. J. Savage) stated this afternoon that it was at first thought that the matter might be dealt with by a clause ia a Finance Bill, but it was now felt that it would be necessary to prepare a separate Bill to achieve the aims of the Government. "We want to do the job thoroughly, said Mr. Savage. "We don't want a Bill that someone can drive a horse and cart through. Even if we have to make the legislation retrospective, it would be better than rushing the mattor 1 " Much the same applied in the case of'pension restorations, said Mr. Savage. People were asking when the cuts in pensions were to be restored, but they should remember that it was necessary for the Government to build a foundation.
