SEVERAL SNIPERS SHOT ACTION BY POLICE & TROOPS PROTECTION FOR. JEWS United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received June 1, 11.20 a.m.) JERUSALEM, May 31. Soldiers and police, retaliating vigorously against snipers, killed several Arabs at Haifa and Jaffa. Tear-gas pistols disguised as pencils are being distributed among the Jews as a protection against Arab attacks. ! The Hi£h Commissioner, Sir Arthur Wauchope, summoned Arab Mayors and urged them to pacify the country and persuade Arabs to submit their grievances to the forthcoming Royal Commission. It is understood that the Mayors replied that they were unable to pacify the Arabs until their demands were conceded.

Disturbances, ambushes, arson, and shooting continue in many districts. Sealorth Highlanders and police, searching for arms in a village near Nablus, replied to fire from neighbouring hills, killing one Arab and injuring two.

Two British constables were ambushed and one wounded near Beersheba.
